I. Information and links

• December 16. Visa applications from "asylum travel agencies" turned down flat - article in Aftenposten (in Norwegian; abstract in Russian).

• November 16. Universitetsavisa ran a whole spread about Norwegian University Center in St. Petersburg and about Russian and Norwegian language students.

• October 12. Grants for Scandinavian cooperation with the Baltic States and Northwest Russia, 2002. Research; collaboration between non-profit organizations. Application deadline February 1, 2002.

  Ellen Marie-Therese Solberg later wrote a useful explanation in NTNU Innsida:

  Nordisk ministerråds nettverksprogram 02/03 for Baltikum og Nordvest-Russland

  Det kan søkes om støtte (reise- og oppholdsutgifter) til samarbeid mellom de nordiske land og Baltikum/Norvest-Russland gjennom nettverksbygging innen utdanning/forskning og frivillige organisasjoner. Nettverket må bestå av minst to nordiske institutsjoner i to ulike land og en institusjon i nærområdet. Søknaden skal fremmes av den institusjon som er koordinator i nettverket. Programmet er åpent for alle fagområder, men med prioritet til flg. fag innen utdanning/forskning:

  • nordisk språk
  • kultur- og samfunnsfag
  • miljørelaterte emner.

  Søknadsfrist: 01.februar 2002.

• October 11. NRK1 aired on Saturday, October 13 at 12:50: Brennpunkt: Mannen som vende hjulet ryggen (half-hour program about the life of Russian researcher Magomet Sagov who is now working in Norway).

• September 29. New additions to club film library, Trondheim public library: 60 Russian video cassettes.

• August 17. I'm proud! The request for appointment from the police asked me to come "as a Russian student who has been living in Norway for several years, and an active member of the Russian Society in Trondheim" (italic mine -- VM).

• July 3. New additions to club film library (25 cassettes)

• June 1. This year, INTAS proposal deadline is September 28.
  INTAS is a programme for research cooperation between European countries and newly independent states from the former Soviet Union.

• April 6. Scholarship programme for collaboration with Northwestern Russia (including Moscow) and the Baltic States for 2001/2002 has application deadline on June 15 this year, as usually. Note that the International Scholarship Section of NFR also offers other similar programs.

• April 4. The biggest Norwegian registrar and Web hosting company - Active ISP (following this link crashes Netscape, as of June 2001) - is causing us a trouble! They keep demanding the fee for a hosting service that never worked properly (scroll down to My Experience with Individual Firms). Though skazka.no site had to be moved to another provider eight months ago, the billing dispute is still not resolved.
  Note from May 15: The dispute has been succesfully resolved (we will pay only for domain name registration, kr. 475). Money-wise, we have no complains to Active ISP.
  Note from July 24: A brand new invoice from Active ISP is in my mailbox. It's for reneval of the (cancelled) hosting and registrar service, i.e. next year's fee. What a scam.

• March 30. Six scholarships are available for Norway from the Russian government in 2001/2002 study year (info from April issue of International Office Newsletter). Contact International Office in your high education institution; in NTNU, ask Bjorn Kolstad.

• February 13. We opened a Russian kindergarten.

• February 11. Scandinavian countries join the Schengen zone on March 25, 2001. This means that if you have a Norwegian residence permit, you won't need visas to travel in Scandinavia and most part of Europe. However, there can be some restrictions due to expiration date of your residence permit and exact procedure of the change in rules. To avoid surprises, it is recommended you contact the embassy of the country you are going to and ask if you need a visa.

• January 25. We ask club members to pay their kr. 50 membership fee for year 2001 as soon as possible. Please transfer it to the club bank account or pay in person to any board member.

• January 9. The Russian club in Tromsoe now has its own Web site, just as the Russian club in Stavanger. Of course, there are more Russian organizations that currently don't have Web presence, including our embassy.
  P.S. Just after writing this, I found the site of Russian Embassy in Oslo.

• January 8. The club board wishes everybody happy New Year once more. In this year, we have 3,000 kroner from the Trondheim commune for site hosting, buying films and other similar expenses. In January, 30 new films have already been added to the club film library, many of which were released on video just recently. Also, a Russian keyboard was purchased (club members can borrow it).

• December 3. Oslo, December 14-16: 5 year anniversary of St. Olga Orthodox parish.

• November 23. (near Oslo), November 4 - December 21: Asker museum presents exhibition about cartoonist Valery Carrick, who emigrated to Norway after the Russian revolution.

• November 23. Oslo, November 29: Thematic evening on Norwegian humanitarian help to Russia; films.

• November 13. Oslo, November 23: Lecture on Russian economics.

• October 23. Tromsø, November 16-17: Orthodox church service, lectures at the university.

• October 18. Oslo, November 2: Concert (Ekaterina Ognitjenko sings popular opera songs).

• October 17. The Baltic Cultural Festival in the Nordic Countries is under way. Unfortunately, we've learned about it a bit late, but few events and exhibitions in Trondheim and in other cities can still be visited. Check festival program.

• September 19. Trondheim, November 29-30: Riga Ballet (Latvian National Opera Ballet) presents Nutcracker in Olavshallen.

• September 19. Trondheim, September 27: Shostakovich. Symphony nr. 7 "Leningrad" performed by Trondheim Symphony Orchestra in Olavshallen. Conductor Andrey Boreyko.

• September 17. Trondheim, September 22: Concert of "Ecclesiastes" group (Russian church and folk music).

• September 8. Oslo, September 20-28: Russian Films Week in Cinemateket.
  Bergen, September 28 - October 3: same Russian Films Week.

• September 1. Trondheim, September 8: Maxim Vengerov with Trondheim Symphony Orhestra in Olavshallen. Is this the most expensive performance in the history of the concert hall (ticket kr. 550)? That's his only concert in Norway, anyway.

• August 24. Oslo, August 30: The movie "Svadba" ("Bryllupet", "The Wedding") will be first presented in Norway by its director Pavel Lungin. The show is reportedly timed to the Crown Prince's wedding.

• August 24. Oslo, August 31: Lecture on Russian and East European ballet.

• August 9. "Veslyana" folk dance group performs in Oslo on September 26-27.

• August 6. In September, Children Choir of St. Petersburg TV and Radio tours Norway. 11 concerts in Norway and one in Stockholm. Trondheim: Sunday, September 23 in Nidarosdomen.
  Skazka members provided housing in Trondheim to adults from the choir.

• July 7. St. Basil Man Choir of Moscow Patriarchate makes its annual tour of Norway. Two performances are scheduled in Trondheim: July 30 at 19:30 in Vaar Frue Kirke and July 31 at 20:00 in Nidarosdomen. Tickets kr. 160/180.
