15% tax deduction for foreign employees

Foreigners temporary working in Norway are entitled for a special tax deduction - standardfradrag ("standard deduction"). It reduces the amount of income tax they pay by 10,000 kroner and more per year for the first four years. You may need to check personally if you belong to the "temporary working foreigner" category of not. Temporarily appointed researchers and exchange students do qualify for the standard deduction.

The problem is that your local tax office will usually "forget" to inform you of this deduction, and will try not to include it on every possible occasion.

After you've returned the tax declaration in the following year, it becomes more difficult to claim money back. Nevertheless some Russians managed to get partial refund for several years back. If you find yourself in a similar situation, let us know and we'll try to provide you with more detailed advice.

I could scan the relevant documents, but decided you'd better go throug them yourself, without possibly misleading examples. Also, I didn't receive a single correctly filled tax declaration in the last three years. I always had to write in corrections before returning it. Here is a report sent me after correction (I highlighted the line with added standardfradrag).

I the end, I should note that standardfradrag is in fact applicable in the first four tax declarations, not in the first four years of employment.
